St. Lucia 101, your first tour to St. Lucia with iSimangaliso Birding Route

The St. Lucia 101 tour will last for 4 days and three nights. You will need to be able to carry all your luggage yourself, and you may need to put it on your lap in the Taxi, so remember to bring only what you need and no extras.

Comfortable walking shoes are an essential part of your luggage, and you should not bring more than 2 pairs of shoes. (ladies note not more than 2 pairs of shoes) One for walking and one to wear around the hostel. Remember a hat and sun screen, as summer is nearly with us and the days are warm in St. Lucia.

Your personal toiletries such as soap, toothpaste and shampoo, hair brush or comb should be packed in a small bag along with your towel and face cloth.  There are showers and baths at the back packers hostel, but you will need to bring your own toiletries.

We are not going on a fashion parade, and you should not bring more than 6 changes of clothes. Do not bring excessive luggage, and evaluate the difficulty of carrying what you have packed. Remember that you will need to carry this luggage from Amanzamtoti Station onto the train, then from the train to the taxi rank which is quite far if you are carrying heavy. You will also need to carry this luggage in Mtubatuba when you transit from the long distance Taxi to a local taxi. The 2 Taxi ranks are quite far apart , and when travelling you should never let our luggage out of your sight unless it has been arranged properly by your tour guide or other responsible person.

A single back pack or small sports carry bag is ideal. You can fit in one shirt for each day, 2 pairs of shorts, one pair of jeans, underwear and clean socks for 4 days, a track suit or similar warm clothing for just in case the weather turns nasty. When you go out in the evening,  jeans and tee shirts are acceptable and there is no formal wear required at all.

Remember to be conservative and not over pack. Every person on the St. Lucia 101 tour is limited to one bag per person, as you will need to look after your own luggage. There is no check in counter like there is when you travel by plane, and if you are not careful your luggage may grow its own legs and disappear.

For the ladies.....

Remember that we will be doing a lot of walking, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. High heels will be a problem in the bush, so leave them at home. The night life in St. Lucia is very relaxed , so a medium length dress, jeans and tee shirts or a skirt with tank top and open shoes is acceptable and the norm.

Suggested packing list for ladies....

2 skirts
one pair of jeans
2 short pants
3 blouses / other tops
3 tee shirts
one track suit / other warm top for night time.
comfortable walking shoes with clean socks for 4 days.
flip flops or sandals for around the hostel
towel, face cloth and toiletries

Bedding (sheets, blankets and pillowslips) are provided by the back packers hostel where you will be sleeping in double bunk beds, so a sleeping bag is not essential

Remember some extra spending money for drinks when out at night, or just in case you discover that special art work that will complement what you already have on display at home...
