St. Lucia 101, your first tour to St. Lucia with iSimangaliso Birding Route

St. Lucia 101, your first tour to St. Lucia with iSimangaliso Birding RouteSt. Lucia 101 is your introduction to a new style of tours to St. Lucia along the Elephant Coast of KZN South Africa within the iSimangaliso Wetland park where you will experience travel like never before. We will start with a short train journey From Amanzamtoti station to New Durban station.

Once at new Durban station you will get an opportunity to walk around and experience the street life and vibrant shopping opportunities of the area around the New Durban Station before catching a long distance Taxi from Durban to Mtubatuba.

Once in Mtubatuba, the gate way to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, you will again get an opportunity to experience the street life of a typical African town with traditional medicines and fresh produce on sale as well as street meals and local arts and craftsArts and crafts within the Mtubatuba and St. Lucia area of the Elephant Coast of KZN South Africa for sale.

The next part of our journey will be by local Taxi between Mtubatuba and St. Lucia which is a 25 Km trip. The Taxi will stop in the main street of St. Lucia (McKenzie Street) and we will book into our accommodation at one of the local Back Packers establishments. Once booked in and allocated beds in the dormitory we will get an opportunity to visit the local shops and buy the ingredients for supper.

Once back at the back packers hostel  some of us will be free to relax whilst the rest will be allocated kitchen duties and prepare the food we purchased in the market and supermarket. After supper you will be free to enjoy the night life in St. Lucia.

Early Morning of day 2 will see us on the Gwala Gwala Trail, a short walking trail that starts in the St. Lucia Estuary village and iSimangaliso Birding Route is based in the Ukhanyakude disrict Municipality which has been branded as the Elephant Coastleads down to a spot called HONEY MOON BEND on the banks of the St. Lucia estuary with views of the mangrove covered slands.

From honey moon bend we will take a slow walk along the banks of the St. Lucia Estuary down to the beach then on to the St. Lucia estuary Mouth. If the St. Lucia Estuary Mouth is closed then we will walk along the beach to the Umfolozi River mouth, If we are lucky and the boats are going out we may get an opportunity to see the whale watching boat launch.

A Taxi will pick us up at the beach at around lunch time, then we will be on our way to see the Butterfly House at Manukelana Art and Nursery. This is a new project aimed at educating people about butterflies and their importance within the many ecosystems of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and surrounding areas. We will have lunch at either Manukelana  or The  Bundu Basher, and also take a short tour of Manukelana Art and Nursery and related community projects.

Once again some will be on kitchen duties to prepare supper whilst the others relax and enjoy the local environment. After supper you will once again be free to enjoy the night life of St. Lucia.

On Day 3 we will take an early morning boat trip along the St. Lucia estuary with Derrick Walsh as our SKIPPER and experience the wild life along the estuary banks. Once back on shore we will catch a taxi to Dukuduku forest and then visit some of the locals where we should get an opportunity to see an African Harrier Hawk patrolling the area around its nesting site. Next part of the trip will see us crossing the Umfolozi River on a makeshift boat to see the banana plantations on the south bank of the Umfolozi River, where we should be able to eat the freshest bananas ever, straight from the tree to your hands for peeling and eating.

On return to St. Lucia we will once again visit the market and super market to buy what we will have for supper. Just like every other night on this trip some will relax whilst others will prepare our evening meal. After supper you will get an opportunity to relax and chill out or take a walk into the  St. Lucia village to enjoy the night life with the friendly locals.

Morning of day 4 will see us packing up and preparing to go home. We will catch a local taxi to Mtubatuba, then walk around Mtubatuba for a while before catching a long distance Taxi to Durban. From the Taxi Rank in Durban you can decide which way next, or catch a train back to Toti then be on your way.

The above itinerary is not written in stone, and the order of things may change, but you will experience the activities listed here There are also some Optional extras take a look here
